Noardburgum village (Noordbergum)

Flagdescription: red with a green hoist chevron reaching the cross with a yellow acorn in green.
On the site of this village was formerly the Burgumerheide (heath of Burgum), also known as the "grutte Stateheide", north of Burgum. In the 19th century the heath was transformed into arable land, at the instigation of Nicolaas Ypey (1794-1869).  In 1930 all small settlements from the heath ground to the village were united in one village, named Noardburgum (Dutch: Noordbergum). The red field represents the heath, and the lion is from the arms of Fryslân province. The acorn and clover are from the arms of the Ypey family. The last too represent fertile soil. The apex of the chevron symbolizes the destruction of the heath by the green arable land. In Noardburgum is the most important drinking-water installation in Fryslân - that is why the green chevron is charged with two white wavy bars.
