Tsjerkwerd (Frisian: Tsjerkwert) Coat of Arms: in green three silver lozenges, placed
2:1; in chief with three red waterlilyleaves.
The lozenges are derived from the arms of the Walta-family, which resided
on the "stins" (fortified stately house) in this village.
Flag: diagonally divided white-green; on white a red waterlilyleaf;
at the hoist three horizontal stripes blue-white-blue, representing the
Wûnseradiel flag.
Tsjerwerd is a village SW of of Bolsward
city, on the canal to Workum, with (1958) 523;
(1974) 438 inhabitants. Hamlets: Arkum, Jonkershuizen, Baburen. West of
Tsjerkwerd is the van Panhuyskanaal.
Nickname: "Skieppesturten" (sheeptails); "Lammesturten"
(lamb's tails - referring to the bad habit of keeping sheep of course,
but also possibly to small lambs indicating their happiness.
