Vlagtwedde is in east Groningen, bordering on Germany. It includes
the famous marshes of Bourtange, where in the 1593 a fort was built for
the defense of our realm. Hopefully all villages and neighbourhoods will
not all make their own flag: there are c. 70!
Flag: quartered of yellow and blue, in such a way that the vertical
dividing line as at 1/3 flaglength. Over all a kwartered cross countercharged,
with at the hoist a cannon on gun-mounting, all black, and at the same
place below a broad-armed cross, with a vertical red arm and a horizontal
white arm.
Adopted 12 Dec 1967 by municipal resolution; design: Mr. G.A. Bontekoe.
The colors blue and yellow and the cannon are derived from the municipal
arms. The cross, in red and white color, on a blue field, remind of the
monks, who founded long ago the monastery in Ter Apel.
