In 1982 the municipality of Nieuwstadt was merged with Susteren.
Nieuwstadt had a flag: three equally wide horizontal stripes yellow
- white - blue; in the canton a green aldertree with three branches. Adopted
12 Jul 1961.
The area where Nieuwstadt now is was formerly known as "Elsene",
because it was covered with alder-trees. In 1263 the settlements received
city-rights, and was then named "Neye Stadt" (new town).
