Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.flagchart.net
adopted 27 Jan 1987
Heusden is a village in the municipality of Asten, Noord-Brabant province,
in the eastern region known as "De Peel".
Note: Heusden village is not to be confused with the munipality (and
town) of Heusden, equally in Noord-Brabant.
Stefan Lambrechts sent an article from the Eindhovens Dagblad
of 13 Oct 2003 by Marie-Louise Klomp:
"In the community hall Unitas of Asten-Heusden a new villageflag was
unveiled yesterday. "Sparkling, to-the-point, rural and lively" was the
description given after the unveiling. Both designers, Jacques Madou and
Theo van Dam, assumed that the Heusdenaren had to get used to it. "It is
certainly not a traditional flag, but one in which past and future of Heusden
have been expressed."
While the local brassband St. Antonius was playing the Heusdens
Koraal, specially composed by director T. Snoek, Wim Leenders unveiled
the villageflag.
In order to emphasize that the flag was not intended to compete with
the municipal flag of Asten, the villageflag was flanked by the Asten-
and Noord-Brabant provincial flag. The flag was financed by the Komfeest
Heusden, Asten municipality, the Jan van der Loo Fonds and the revenue
of the Heusden soccer-tournament."
The flag can be seen on the website
of Asten municipality (click dorps- en wijkraden) behind the Heusden
village council. Info from the same site:
In the middle of the 19th century there were four hamlets: the "Voorste
Heusden" (foremost Heusden), the "Middelste Heusden" (Heusden
Central), de "Achterste Heusden" (Aftermost) en "de Behelp"
along a sandridge right through De Peel to Nederweert (in Limburg province).
The presence of the castle-ruins with gate and manorfarm suggests that
Heusden must
have been a very old settlement. Heusden became a parish in 1921, when
the church was built. The inhabitants of the hamlets were mainly peasants,
who dug peat and sold it elsewhere. In the second half of the 19th century
they tried to make De Peel suitable for agriculture. They burned the terrain
down in spring and hoped to be able to use it for the cultivation of buckwheat.
In Heusden is a statue of "De Peelwerker" (the Peel-worker),
whose face has been used on the flag against the orange disk.

Picasso pales to this! (the pronunciation of Dutch "Peel" is
the same as English "pale")
Hans van Heijningen, 16 Oct 2004
It's a party with no pale; it's beyond the pale. What a flag!!!
