adopted 6 Jun 1968.
Apart from the shoe-industry Loon op Zand has a great attraction in "Sprookjespark De Efteling" in Kaatsheuvel, a fairytale resort, most of which was designed by Anton Pieck c. 1950.
Nicknames:
"Theebuiken" - teabellies, who like tea too much
"Zwävelsoppers" - sulphurdippers: there were many travelling
salesmen dealing with sulphur-sticks (predecessors of matches), which had
to be dipped in sulphur.
"Pekkellikkers" - pekkel is a synonym of "jenever"
- gin: they liked a glas of gin (or two).
Nurseryrhyme:
Loon op Zand
Licht volk, licht land
Ze schooien de kost
En ze stelen de brand
Loon op Zand
light people, light land,
They beg for food
and they stel the fire (=fuel)
Kaatsheuvel:
"Zwevelmarsen" - the "Kètsers" sold the sulphursticks,
which were dipped in Loon.
"Boenderbinders" - scrubber-binders, made from the heather in
the neighbourhood.
