Nieuwvliet former municipality
Nieuwvliet (meaning: new river, brook) is a former municipality in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen,
since 1970 part of Oostburg, and since 2003 in Sluis in Zeeland province.
Flagproposal: : diagonally divided from hoisttop to flybottom of white
and blue, with on white a blue crescent pointing upwards, and on blue a
white key.
The flag shows a division like the arms of the "Vrije van Brugge" (Freedom
of Brugge).
The crescent is derived from the municipal arms, while the key refers
to the nickname of the village: "Sinte Pier" = St. Peter, whose emblem
was the key.
In the Middle Ages the "Zwarte Gat" (Black Hole), the middle of the
three Zwin-mouthes, flowed here into the sea. The marshy area was reclaimed
in 1527 by the family Adornis from Brugge. The village of Nieuwvliet developed
here, and from 1620 on Belgian Baptists from Flanders settled here. The
Calvinists didn't appreciate that, so the Baptists gradually moved from
here until in 1777 they had all disappeared.
