Vogelwaarde former municipality

Vogelwaarde is a former municipality, now part of Hontenisse in Zeeland province. The name "Vogelwaarde" (=Birdpolder) was invented in 1936 for the new municipality after the merger of the former municipalities of Boschkapelle, Hengstdijk, Ossenisse and Stoppeldijk. The village of Vogelwaarde is younger. The settlements Boschkapelle and Stoppeldijk merged in 1970 to become the village of Vogelwaarde, in the then new municipality of Hontenisse, in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, just east of Terneuzen.

Flag adopted 21 Aug 1964; description: quartered of yellow and green; in the first quarter a walking lapwing of natural colors.
Design: Ir. A.J. Beenhakker and the Stichting Banistiek en Heraldiek.
Ir. Beenhakker designed the quartered flag, and adviced against putting a lapwing in the first quarter, as that would make the flag more expensive. On behalf of the SBH Mr. Kl. Sierksma expressed the necessity of putting a lapwing in the first quarter, which would hardly effect the cost of the flag.
As far as is known only one flag was produced for 131,25 HFL.
For a lapwing on a flag see also the Czech municipality of Cejkovice.

Vogelwaarde Coat of Arms

[Vogelwaarde Coat of Arms] by Jarig Bakker, 20 Oct 2004

On 9 Nov 1938 the municipality of Vogelwaarde received its coat of arms:
"Or four lapwings naturel accosted on a green base, the shield surmounted by a crown or of three leaves and two pearls".
The Coat of Arms is canting, as the birds seen most frequently were lapwings. The number 4 refers to the 4 former municipalities.
