Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 15.102; area: 23,42 km². Settlements: Noordwijkerhout (seat), De Zilk.
Noordwijkerhout is a municipality in (north) Zuid-Holland province, in the "bulb-region", where the Tulips from Amsterdam originate.
In Roman times it was inhabited by Caninefates, a German tribe. In the 9th century it was a popular holiday-resort of the Vikings; one of them, Hrolf or Gerolf, was granted by the king of Lorraine on 4 Aug 889 the fief of the manorlordship of Northgo, the shire north of the Rhine river. Gerolf had a hunting lodge built there, and around the lodge the settlement of Noortigerhout (Noirtigerhout, Nortekerhout - Noordwijkerhout).
The inhabitants lived off agriculture, cattlebreeding and fishing. In the 20th century they started to grow flower-bulbs.

On 13 Jan 1964 a flag was adopted by municipal resolution with a blue field and in the center a yellow lion.

Since 1938 the municipal arms of Noordwijkerhout have been displayed on the municipal flag. Originally it was: bottom half yellow, top half halved - at the hoist the municipal arms, at the fly red; red-yellow fringe. I've put the Shipmate image in
the canton. This is probably a flag made for the occasion of Queen Wilhelmina's 40 years reigning jubilee. Yellow and red were the provincial colors of Zuid-Holland.
