Blazon: På rød bunn et gull kors, utbøyd og tilspisset.
In English: Gules a cross clechy or.
Approved by the royal resolution of 15 December 1972 after a drawing by Hallvard
Trætteberg. [c2j87]
The design is taken from a 14th century painting depicting the death of King
Olav II Haraldsson in the battle of Stiklestad (a village now in the Verdal
municipality) held at 29 July 1030. The
painting is today preserved in the Trondheim cathedral.
The battle was one of the most important in formation of Norwegian state. The
shield depicted to have been used by St. Olav there was red with golden cross
clechy. As [c2j87] notes, all of his men carry shields with crosses, many of the
formy and in various colour combinations, but only king has golden cross on red,
and only his also has "points" making it clechy - thus being exclusive one.
Interesting local regulation with coat of arms depicted (and no flag, although the text
mentions that there should be further illustrations). However, no particular
ratio of flag is prescribed.

However, as the use of table banner in the TV
interview with the mayor shows, the flag is probably to use the cross in
form with equal arms and not "squeezed" as in the COA form.
