In a group of Norway regional and local flags I found two flags not
identified. They are in pattern similar to the regional flags but include in the group of local flags.
Nynorsk: red background with yellow Scandinavian cross.
Jaume Ollé, 16 January 1997
The red and yellow cross design probably refers to a flag used by the 'nynorsk' language movement
well before World War II - and probably also before the early 1930's. The Norwegian national
socialist party was founded by Quisling in 1933. The party adopted a red and yellow Scandinavian cross
flag and the sun cross as a party emblem. One organisation in the 'nynorsk' language movement
scrapped their emblem (the sun cross, or cross of St. Olav which they had used for some time),
and adopted a different one to avoid being associated with the Nazi party.
Avoiding such associations became only stronger after the war, and is still important today.
So, even before the 1930's, I think there were not an official 'nynorsk' flag used throughout
the movement (but I could be wrong on this point). 'Nynorsk' is, BTW, one of the
two standards of written Norwegian.
