Academia Deportiva Cantolao was established in 1981 in the popular sea resort
of Cantolao, part of the town of Callao, by a group of parents whose children
wished to play football. The current President of the club, Dante Mandriotti,
was among the founders. Since then, the club has gained national fame for its
youth academy, which has now 65 branches in Lima, another 16 in the provinces,
and even 1 in Australia.
The most famous player educated in Cantolao is
the striker Claudio Pizzaro (b. 1978), who achieved most of his professional
career in the German Bundesliga. Nicknamed "Andes Bomber", a straightforward
reference to the legendary Gerd Müller, Pizzaro won six times the Bundesliga,
five times the German Cup, and the UEFA Champions League (2012-2013) with Bayern
Munich (2001-2007, 2012-2015; 224 caps, 87 goals), and another German Cup with
Werder Bremen (1999-2001, 2008-2012, 2015-2017; 206 caps, 124 goals, all-time
top scorer). Fifth all-time top scorer in Bundesliga (192 goals in 444 matches),
Pizzaro is the top foreign scorer. Pizzaro played 85 matches for the Peruvian
national team, scoring 20 goals (fifth all-time top scorer)
