About the flag

Sporting Cristal was established on 13 December 1955 in the Rímac district of Lima by Ricardo Bentín and his wife, Esther Grande, the owners of the Backus & Johnson brewery. The club's original name, Sporting Cristal Backus, for the Cristal beer brewed by Backus, was shortened to Sporting Cristal in 1968.

The club registered in the First League in 1956 and won the national title, therefore its nickname, "the club that was born champion". Since then, Sporting Cristal has been continuously playing in the First League, winning 18 national titles and becoming the first Peruvian club to win three titles in a row (1994, 1995, 1996). The club played 31 times the Copa Libertadores, being runner-up in 1997 (0-0, 0-1 to Cruzeiro, Brazil).

The club top scorer (175 goals, 566 caps; 1993-1999, 2000-2003 and 2004-2007) is Jorge Soto (b. 1971), also capped 101 times in the national team (1992-2007; 9 goals).

The first emblem of the club was celestial blue with a white diagonal stripe running from the lower hoist to the upper fly and charged with the initials "SCB"; the upper part of the emblem bore the Peruvian national colors. The emblem was soon modified by mirroring the diagonal stripe, which runs from the upper hoist to the lower fly. Letter "B" was dropped when the club was renamed to Sporting Cristal. The base of the shield was changed from oval to pointed. The shield in
current use is pentagonal, with its vertical borders thicker than the horizontal ones. The three yellow stars surmounting the shield were added in 1997 to celebrate the three national titles won in a row.
