Quoting the website of the Presidency of French Polynesia (page no longer online):
Reao, with its completely enclosed lagoon, is the easternmost inhabited atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago. The 16-kilometer long atoll is located at 18º30'S and 13º25'W. It has been inhabited since the 1st Century AD. Reao is another example of an atoll with many remains of its ancient civilization. Dozens of ancient farming sites have been mapped out along with 60 marae with ahu (altars) made of stone slabs piled on top of each other and topped by erected stones similar to the structures found on Easter Island. In 1822, French navigator Louis Duperrey became the first European to discover Reao.
Leprosy arrived on the atoll after Catholic missionaries Christianized the population in 1865.Reao has a whaleboat dock and an aerodrome. It is the administrative center of a district that includes the neighboring atoll of Pukaruha. Reao's population is 313, based on the 1996 census.

The flag of the Reao Pukarua District, as seen during the Tuamotu and Gambier Inter-Islands Games in July 2002, is diagonally divided yellow-blue with the name of the district written in black capital letters.
