Chitral was semi-independent until 1972 when the Pakistani government abolished all former states in North West Frontier Province. Since 1950, Pakistan was also running all
practical matters of the state, but de-facto, the ruler, or Mehtar, was still recognized as sovereign. The last Mehtar of Chitral was Said-ul-Mulk Nasir (1954-72).

The page about the State of Chitral (in present Pakistan) at
http://www.uq.net.au/%7Ezzhsoszy/ips/c/chitral.html doesn't show the flag,
but there is the state coat of
arms which consist of a flag, which is very interesting and is different from
the flag shown above. However, there is no evidence that this was a real state
flag at any historical point.
