...no, no ! it ain't the new flag of Afghanistan. It is the one of the Mining and Metallurgy Academy in Cracow (Krakow) - Akademia Gorniczo-Hutnicza, one of the most important institutions of higher learning in Poland.

Warszawa Polytechnic flag

[Warszawa Polytechnic flag] image sent by Jarig Bakker, 17 Jan 2002

I found at this website the flag of the Warszawa Polytechnic. A stylish flag, downsized a bit.
Jarig Bakker, 17 Jan 2002

That banner brings up a lot of memories. In spring 1944,my father took part in a bloody, but successful, mission to rescue the leaders of underground Polytechnic, being  hauled by Gestapo to the infamous Pawiak prison after earlier arrest. Not only all the students were rescued, but the banner of the University was found in the Gestapo van and rescued as well. It was a spectacular action in the middle of the day and boosted the morale of the Varsovians. My old man collected bunch of medals for that crazy action. Years later, in October 1956, he was in charge of the administration of the University of Technology - Polytechnic- and thanks to that I'd a chance to witness much of the most significant events of the October Revolution taking place in the Grand Lobby of the Polytechnic. It was there that the councils of workers, students and soldiers were formed and the stern demands were formulated to release from prisons Gomulka, Kliszko and Spychalski and to put them in charge of the country. From that lobby, a call was issued to the workers, students and soldiers to defend Warsaw against advancing Soviet troops and tanks and to remove from power Marshall Rokossovsky and all Soviet officers in the Polish Army.
It was surely an exciting time and the first taste of freedom after the nightmare of Stalinism. That freedom and all the expectations didn't last very long - a year, but that's a different story.
