Harasiuki sounds Japanese to me :o)
Pascal Gross, 2 Nov 2002
Actually it is Ukrainian - Lemko. Hrasiuki commune. Lemko is another
term for Ruthenians/Rusin who live in Eastern Slovakia,
southeast Poland and Western Ukraine, as wel as in Yugoslavia (Vojvodina
mainly). More on this website.
Former name: Krzeszow.
Chrystian Kretowicz, 3 Nov 2002
Harasiuki was never inhabited by Lemkos, Ukrainian mountaineers from
bordering regions of Poland and Slovakia. Up to 1944 it was a mixed Polish-Ukrainian
community, after the forced deportation of some 40 Ukrainian families to
the USSR in 1944 it is Polish. The flag and coat of arms are typical for
recently elaborated symbolism for Polish rural communities.
Harasiuki and Krzeszow are neighbouring communes, name of the first
can sound Japanese, but is pure Slavic: a derivation from the name Harasym/Herasym
(Ruthenian adaptation of Greek Gerasimos).
