Flag description: red with a fly-diagonal "cut", a white inner border
except at the hoist; at the hoist a battle-axe with yellow haft and grey
blade, and a grey stone. proportions 1:2.
Coat of Arms: Spanish II-type heraldic shield, of uniform red color with the
arms containing a graphic image of the weapons of the ancient pagan Prusian
(not Prussian) tribes - the Barts and the Natangs.- which are 2 iron battle
axes and 15 stones. The shape of these weapons is based on the actual Prusian
battle-axes.
The elements of the symbols correspond to the name of the County, as
these are a compilation of the words "Barten" - ax and "Stein" - stone.
Bartenstein is the old, German name of the captal of the County. Located
in the center of the shield, the gold, Sigismund-type (closed) royal crown,
signifies the period of 1466-1657, when the Monastic Prussia (Ordensstaat)
and since 1525, the Ducal Prussia (Herzogtum Preussen) was a fief of the
Commonwealth of Both Nations. It commemorates also the Oath of Loyalty
of Albrecht von Hohenzollern to King Sigismund I Jagiello (the Old) taken
in Cracow (Krakow) in 1525 and making the Ducal Prussia a fief of the Crown
of Poland."
