About the Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain blue field.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 26 May 1998

Coat of arms

[Aljezur municipality CoA] image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 9 Nov 2014

The coat of arms features 3 wavy lines below of silver-green-silver, a red tower with a blue door on a black hill and in chief the traditional symbols of Algarve: a christian king and a moor king, all on silver background. Above the shield, a four-towered mural crown and below a scroll reading "VILA DE ALJEZUR".
Meaning:
A recent source shows many differences in the charges of the shield. The waves represent the sea and the kings represent Algarve. Aljezur has a small but full fledged moorish castle. The tower might symbolize it.
Jorge Candeias, 21 May 1998 and António Martins-Tuválkin, 26 May 1998

Flag and arms adopted and published in Diário do Governo : I Série on 17 February 1936

Version without Coat of Arms

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Coat of Arms Variation

A recent source shows many differences in the charges of the shield: the tower with a different shape, with a second door in the second floor, and with small windows in both floors, the wavy lines a lot narrower, leaving a black space below and a lower hill.
Jorge Candeias, 21 May 1998

Presentation of Aljezur

Aljezur is another town from my own region, Algarvedistrict of Faro, old province of Algarve. This municipality is placed in the western coast of Algarve, bordering the Alentejo to the north. It has an area of 323,6 km2 and less than 5000 inhabitants distributed in four communes. This municipality is also quite poor, relying mostly on agriculture. However, there are now some prospects of touristic development, both (Algarvain) traditional tourism of sun and beach, and also ecological tourism, because part of it’s territory belongs to a natural park (Natural Park of Southwestern Alentejo and St. Vincent Coast).
Jorge Candeias, 21 May 1998
