It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quarterly (meaning town rank) of purple and yellow.

The coat of arms is sable three corn ears or leaved vert and tied gules on a bordure argent eight grape bunches purple leaved vert. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE LOUSADA".
Meaning:
The toponym has to do with slate (lousa, in portuguese) but there is no trace of it on the arms.

Lousada municipality had 44 598 inhabitants in 2000 (43 940 in 1990), and it is divided in 26 communes, covering 101 km². It belongs to the Porto District and to the old province of Douro Litoral.
