About the Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of yellow and black.

Klaus-Michael Schneider, 22 July 2015

Well… here my sources show the flag in orange and black. We had had a discussion about such cases of “weird” shades and got to the conclusion that the laws probably do not contemplate them. We only had some doubts about the orange colour (should it be yellow, should it be red?). So, the above is probably correct by the law (probably — note that this is a non-official site). It is yet to be known if my source shows a flag as used or just a printing error.

Coat of arms

Shield Azure three peaks Or lined Sable charged with three connected barrulets wavy Argent- Azure - Argent, in chief a 5-point star Argent flanked by two watermill's wheels Or. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "VILA DE MANTEIGAS"
Meaning:
The blue colour of the shield, in heraldry usually symbolizing charity, here is representing the splendour of the Estrela Mountains and the clean air used for recovery. Peaks and star are also referring to the Estrela Mountains. The watermill's wheels are representing local engineering. Their golden colour is symbolizing natural riches. The barrulets are representing the Zêzere River.

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.
