About the Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a purple and white gyronny (city rank) background.

The arms are Purpure an olive tree Vert erradicated of the same and fruited and fimbriated Or between a moon Argent at dexter and a 5-point star Or at sinister. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters scroll reading in black upper case letters "OLIVEIRA DO BAIRRO". (see image above left)
Older sources show a curious version of the arms, partially identical to the post-2004 version, with single moon, but added with lettering "DO BAIRRO", in yellow capitals, under the olive tree. (see image above centre) Since "oliveira" is Portuguese for "olive tree", these would be not "talking arms" (canting) but also "spelling arms". This writing may have been the motive why there's no official arms till so late: I imagine that the local authorities accepted to drop it and allowed the four moons in 1986; in 2003 they insisted in the single but could not have, or wanted not, the writing back on the shield.

Flag and coat of arms adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : III Série in 2004.03.13. These arms and flag were adopted upon the upgrade of the municipality seat to city status in 2003.08.26 (though made official only in 2004.03.13) and are an almost trivial change of the former arms and flag

Former symbols

[Oliveira do Bairro(town) municipality] 2:3 image by Sérgio Horta,

The former arms and flag were adopted and published in the official journal Diário do Governo : III Série in 1986.12.15. These included the usual (town attributes), four visible crown towers and quarterly flag, dully changed in 2004, and two heraldic differences: instead of a star, a (faceless) Sun, and, instead of a single moon, 4 crescents joined millsailwise (French: lunel) (see image above right)Since 1986 is a fairly late date, I'm sure that there were arms in flag in use before this date, but perhaps not officially adopted.
