Coat of arms

[Palmela municipality CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 24 Feb 2000

The coat of arms is Or, a hand Proper holding a palm Vert, below five inescutcheons Azure set in cross each charged with a saltire of five plates (or 10 plates) , all between two St. James crosses Gules (or Purpure) charged in their hearts with a pelican in its piety (or a scallop) Or, each above a tower Gules. (Lots of strange things in this blazon — I sure would like to see the official text…) Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE PALMELA".
Meaning:
The arms are canting, as "palmela" means ""small palm".
António Martins-Tuválkin, 24 Feb 2000

Flag and arms adopted and published in Diário da República: III Série on 4 June 1986
