It is a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms
centered on a background quarterly (meaning town
rank) of white and green. The coat of arms is argent, a lizzard vert
cornered per counter chevron of three fleurs-de-lis gules, in chief an
escutcheon azure, five bezants set in saltire,
crowned or. Mural crown argent with four visible towers
(town rank) and white scroll reading in black
upper case letters "VILA DE SARDOAL".
António Martins-Tuválkin, 3 Aug 1999, and Sérgio Horta, 28 Oct 1999
The arms are canting, since "sardoal" means "place of lizards" —
from "sardão", partial synonym of "lagarto", "lizzard" (actually,
"sardão" refers only to the species Lacerta lepida, while
"lagarto", just like the english word "lizzard", refers to any
middle-to-large sized, four legged, non-crocodylian, extant reptile).
António Martins-Tuválkin, 3 Aug 1999
Sardoal municipality had 4270 inhabitants in 1990, and it is divided
in 4 communes, covering 92.025 km2. It belongs to the
Santarém District and to the old province of
Ribatejo.
