It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of white and red.

The arms are Azure on a base Argent wavy charged with a fess wavy Vert a local fishing sloop Gules emphasised Or and dresses Argent and in chief a sun Or. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "MONTE GORDO".
Meaning:
The base wavy due to the green waves, representing sea water, refers to the town's location on the shores of the Atlentic.

The settlement which is the seat and namesake of this commune used to be a village, and was upgraded to town status in 2001, after its coat of arms and flag was first adopted. The 2004 law issued the trivial changes — the previous flag was plain white, with
a three-towered coat of arms' mural crown.

Monte Gordo Commune is one of the three communes of the Vila Real de Santo António municipality (q.v.); it had 3952 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 4.12 km².
