About the flag

Here it is a translation of the flag description and official symbolism:

"Three colors represent the Department of Itapua: the green is Hope, the white is Peace and the red is Work.

The green stripe: is the color that represents our agricultural wealth in its different headings, the soybean, the grass kills, the wheat, the rice, etc, our mounts and forests, that as a whole qualify our Departement as the breadbasket of the country.

The white stripe: in greater size than the others. It represents peace, the laborious and pacifist spirit and of the inhabitants.

The red stripe: in same size as the green stripe, it represents our red Earth, as a product of the force and the power of our people, the one that in amalgam of race and culture, work and tenacity, constructs day after day, the greatness of our department."

Previously reported flag

Itapua flag
image by Pascal Gross, 05 Apr 1999

[This previously reported flag was found in www.itacom.com.py]. The original link given as a source [http://www.itacom.com.py/itacom/itapua.html] does not work anymore, but the page can still be seen at:

http://web.archive.org/web/20040212042459/http://www.itacom.com.py/itacom/itapua.html

But, at: http://www.itapua.gov.py/departamento/simb.php the flag of Itapúa does not look the same. The stripes are not wavy, the white stripe is a bit larger (which is told in the description), and the coat-of-arms is in the middle of the white stripe [see above].

What is surprising is that the description given on www.itapua.gov.py is somewhat the same as the one we could read at www.itacom.com.py some years ago.

Two possibilities:

  • Itapúa maybe changed its flag (but kept its coat-of-arms, adopted the same description, and the official website says it was adopted by Ordenance 10/94: I suppose in 1994, which is far before our discovery of the previous flag in 1999)

  • Or we might consider the first wavy rendition as a style effect of the webmaster to show the flag as if it were in the wind.
