Overview

Three decrees from 1950 and 1951 established the Romanian military colors, flags and emblems of that times:

  • Decree nr. 189 from 28 July 1950 established the military colors of the Romanian Army and the ensigns of the Air Force and Navy.
  • Decree nr. 190 from 02 August 1950 established the emblem found on the Army officer's uniforms, also used on some flags.
  • Decree nr. 124 from 20 July 1951 modified article 4 of Decree nr. 189 from 28 July 1950.
The military colors and ensigns were granted and used according to military rules of the time.

Military colors

Decree nr. 189 from 28 July 1950, article 2, stated that:

"The military colors of the units of the Romanian Army are represented by three silk stripes: red, yellow and blue, arranged vertically, [with the] blue [stripe] near the hoist.
On margins, the flag has golden fringes and, attached to the exterior corners, golden tassels.
On obverse, in the middle, is the coat of arms of Romania, in natural colors.
Above the coat of arms, on the same side of the flag, in a curved line, is written with golden letters: "FOR OUR HOMELAND".
Under the coat of arms, on the same side of the flag, in a straight line, is written with golden letters: "THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF ROMANIA".
On reverse, in the middle, is the emblem on the Army officer's uniforms.
Under the emblem is written, in a straight line, with golden letters, the name of the unit.
The rod is finished with an ogive-like top, having a five-pointed star in the middle, with the letters RPR inscribed on it."
Annex nr. 1 provided the exact design and dimensions of the military colors:
  • Flag length: 100 cm
  • Flag width: 60 cm
  • Fringe length: 5 cm
  • Coat of arms and emblem height: 20 cm
  • Rod length: 250 cm
  • Ogive height: 15 cm
  • Ogive width: 7 cm
The Decree nr. 124 from 20 July 1951 set the former Naval ensign from 1950 as the military colors of the land units of the Navy.

Air Force ensign

Decree nr. 189 from 28 July 1950, article 3, stated that:

"The ensign of the Air Force is a rectangular sky blue silk cloth. Each of the sides of the ensign has 18 red ray-like stripes.
On margins, the ensign has golden fringes and tassels like the flag on article 2.
On obverse, in the middle, is the coat of arms of Romania, and on reverse, in the middle, is the emblem on the Army officer's uniforms.
The coat of arms of Romania, the emblem and inscriptions are identical with the ones described on article 2.
The ensign described in this article has the design and dimensions provided in Annex nr. 2."
Annex nr. 2 provided the exact design and dimensions of the Air Force ensign:
  • Flag length: 100 cm
  • Flag width: 60 cm
  • Fringe length: 5 cm
  • Coat of arms and emblem height: 20 cm
  • Rod length: 250 cm
  • Ogive height: 15 cm
  • Ogive width: 7 cm
  • Angle of the red ray-like stripes: 18°

Naval ensign

Decree nr. 189 from 28 July 1950, article 4, stated that:

"The Naval ensign is made of two rectangular silk stripes, [coloured] white and blue, arranged horizontally. The blue one is below, measuring 20 cm width and the white one is above, measuring 40 cm width.
On obverse, in the middle of the white stripe, is the coat of arms of Romania, in natural colors, and on reverse, in the middle, is the emblem on the Army officer's uniforms.
The coat of arms of Romania, the emblem, the inscriptions, fringes and tassels are identical with the ones described on article 2.
The flag described in this article has the design and dimensions provided in Annex nr. 3."
Annex nr. 3 provided the exact design and dimensions of the military colors:
  • Flag length: 100 cm
  • Flag width: 60 cm
  • White stripe width: 40 cm
  • Blue stripe width: 20 cm
  • Fringe length: 5 cm
  • Coat of arms and emblem height: 20 cm; they are placed at 9 cm above the blue stripe and 11 cm below the top margin of the flag
  • Rod length: 250 cm
  • Ogive height: 15 cm
  • Ogive width: 7 cm

The Decree nr. 124 from 20 July 1951 established a new Naval ensign of Romania:

"The Naval ensign is made of a rectangular bunting cloth, having printed on both sides the colors white and blue, in two horizontal stripes: the blue one below and the white one above.
In the middle of the white stripe, on both sides, is the coat of arms of Romania, in natural colors. The ensign hasn't any fringes or tassels, but a line and a device for hoisting the ensign."
The annex of the Decree provided the design and dimensions of this ensign. It had all its dimensions related to the length of the flag (L):
  • Flag width (W): 0.6L
  • White stripe width: 2/3W
  • Blue stripe width: 1/3W
  • Coat of arms height: 1/3W
  • Distance between the coat of arms and the top and bottom margins of the white stripe: 1/6W
The dimensions of the ensign were established by the Ministry of Armed Forces, according to the size of the ships and the hoisting place.

Coast Guard ensign

The Decree nr. 124 from 20 July 1951 established the Coast guard ensign of Romania:

"The Coast guard ensign is made of a rectangular bunting cloth, having printed on both sides the colors white and border-guard-green, in two horizontal stripes: the border-guard-green one below and the white one above.
In the middle of the white stripe, on both sides, is the coat of arms of Romania, in natural colors. The ensign hasn't any fringes or tassels, but a line and a device for hoisting the ensign."
The annex of the Decree provided the design and dimensions of this ensign. It had all its dimensions related to the length of the flag (L):
  • Flag width (W): 0.6L
  • White stripe width: 2/3W
  • Green stripe width: 1/3W
  • Coat of arms height: 1/3W
  • Distance between the coat of arms and the top and bottom margins of the white stripe: 1/6W
The dimensions of the ensign were established by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, according to the size of the ships and the hoisting place.

Decree nr. 190 from 02 August 1950 describes, among others, the emblem on the Army officer's uniforms. The diameter of the red star is 34 mm, the diameter of the yellow circle is 15 mm and the diameter of the blue circle is 11 mm. The letters in the middle are written with golden paint. On flags, this dimensions are kept proportionally.
