Coat of Arms

[coat of arms] image by Alex Danes

The coat of arms was readopted in 1996, but its basic design dates back to the XIVth century: an old French shield Azure, a coronet Or with roots Argent below it. The shield is crowned with a mural crown with seven towers (symbol of municipalities). Below the shield there is a ribbon Gules with the motto "DEO VINDICI PATRIÆ" Argent (in English: "To God, defender of the homeland").

Description of the flag

The Municipal Council of Brasov approved on 1 December 2001 the flag proposed by the Mayoralty. The flag was to be made of silver-grey silk and would have had the coat of arms of the city on both sides; above it, the inscription "MUNICIPIUL BRAŞOV", and below it a ribbon with the motto "DEO VINDICI PATRIÆ".

The current flag is a little bit different and shows a silver-white cloth with the city's coat of arms in the middle and the red inscription "BRAŞOV" under it. The flag is printed only on one side.

It is permanently displayed, along with the flag of Romania, in front of the townhall, in the mayor's and vice-mayors' offices, in the council hall etc.

Historical flags, 1601

On 21 August 1601 the Austrian artillerist Georg Puchner painted and described 110 flags captured by the Wallachian prince Michael the Brave and sent to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph IInd. The water colour paintings are found today in the Library of Dresden, Germany, volume G. 81. In this document there are two flags of Brasov.

One of them is a white flag with a shield Argent bordered Gules in the middle. On the shield is the coat of arms of Brasov: a coronet Or with roots Sable below it. The shield is surrounded by a green laurel wreath tied with a red long ribbon having a bow on top of the wreath.

The second one is dark-reddish (or purple), with two thin yellow stripes on top and bottom of the flag. In the middle there is a blue circle, surrounded by two golden laurel wreaths tied with long yellow ribbons. In the middle of the blue circle there is the golden coat of arms of the city and under it its latin name: "CORONA".
