Democratic Alternative was founded in July
1997 by Nebojša Čović, previously a prominent member of the Socialist Party of Serbia, who had left that party earlier same year
(according to his words), or was expelled from it (according to his
former comrades' official statement), due to disagreement about the
recognition of outcome of the November 1996 local election in
Belgrade: while the SPS did not recognize the victory of Together coalition, trying to forcibly repeat the election process as many times as necessary to achieve its own victory (giving up only after
months-long protests), Mr Čović insisted that the original result
should be unconditionally recognized, although it meant his own
stepping down from the post of Mayor of Belgrade. In 2000, Democratic
Alternative took part in founding of the Democratic Opposition of
Serbia (DOS), remaining its member until it was disbanded in 2003.
In 2004, the party merged into the Social Democratic Party
(Socijaldemokratska partija), another former member of the DOS, Mr
Čović becoming that party's president, which he remained until the
party was eventually disbanded in 2010.

The flag of DA was white, with the party name
inscribed in two lines in blue beneath the party logo, which is an
oval, divided by a white stroke of unequal width into a larger blue
portion at the top and a smaller red one at the bottom, blue portion
also bearing large white initials "DA", positioned so as to be
underlined by the white stroke. The logo and flag have had two
versions, employing either the Cyrillic (photo, 5 October 2000) or the Latin script; in
Cyrillic version, both initials were conjoined with the white stroke,
while in Latin version, only the letter "A" was conjoined. In both
versions, the typeface used was Friz Quadrata.
While it was never explicitly stated, the initials also form Serbian
word for "yes", thus implicitly suggesting the user of logo as the
right choice for the viewer, which was additionally emphasized by the
underlining.
