The flag of Smederevska Palanka used until February 2009 was prescribed by Decisions Odluka o grbu i zastavi (stegu) opštine i naseljenog mesta Smederevska Palanka and Odluka o upotrebi i zaštiti grba i zastave (stega) opštine i naseljenog mesta Smederevska Palanka, adopted on 30 April 2003.

The flag is a simplified square banner of the municipal arms, "Per fess lowered in palisade cut vert a church argent and sable".
There are three coats of arms. The ceremonial (greater) coat of arms is:
"Per fess lowered in palisade cut vert a church argent and sable a fess wavy or cotised, crowned with a masoned crown or, supported by two lions rampant gules langued or and armed argent holding a sword argent hilted or and a banner dexter that of Serbia and sinister that of Smederevska Palanka, standing on a compartment of an oak branch or with a ribbon purpure inscribed with the name of the city argent.
The middle coat of arms retains the crown, but has an oak wreath with the ribbon instead.
The lesser coat of arms consists of the shield only.<
