Description of the flag

At this Slovak site, reverse and obverse of a blue - gold (?) - red flag with inscription "1590-1993" and insignia and Cyrillic text. It looks like the Don Cossack flag, but this is of Volžští kozáci (Volga Cossacks).
Jarig Bakker, 16 Jan 2001

I don't know why the Volga cossacks use the dates 1560-1993. Officially the oldest cossack army in Russia is Don army (founded 1570). I think:

  • 1560 - first reference about cossacks
  • 1993 - foundation of Volga Cossack Army
Victor Lomantsov, 17 Jan 2001

Larger images of the flag are (now?) available in this site. The reverse of the flag is at http://www.army.mysteria.cz/east/zo.jpg and the obverse at http://www.army.mysteria.cz/east/zl.jpg (very hard to fully download due to slow server)

Just like the Don Cossack flag ru_cdon.html, the background is a horizontal tricolor of blue, yellow and red; the obverse includes an religious image centered on the yellow panel (iconic Christ, and in ru-58.html), and lettering reading "Volẑskoe Kazaĉhe Voĭsko | Волжское Казачье Войско" (Cossack Army of the Volga), in red arched on the blue and yellow areas, and "Nikogo ne ustraŝush! | Никого не устрашусь!" (We fear no one!) in white letters straight on the red area; the reverse, as mentioned, shows the Volga Cossack emblem (mentioned above) flanked by the mentioned dates set in red digits.
It should be noted that this flag is *not* an historical item, as the it uses post-1918 Russian spelling.
