The flag can be described as a banner of arms. The upper field of the arms
has an iron sign, due to the iron and steel industry of the town. The lower
field includes the arms of the family De Geer; Louis De Geer came to Finspång
from Wallonia in the 17th Century and built up the iron industry. The family
De Geer has since been very prosperous in Sweden and two times we have had a
De Geer as prime minister.
Elias Granqvist, 25 September 2005
Louis de Geer was born in Liège 17 Nov 1587, son of Louis de Gaillarmont.
The family moved to Dordrecht in 1596 for economic reason (trouble with the
guilds). Louis (or Lodewijk) associated with the Trip family in the money and
arms trade. He became puissant rich by the 30-years war, delivering ammo to
all parties, and monopolizing the Swedish mines (silver in Sala, copper in
Falun, iron in Dannemora). When he died 19 Jun 1652 in Amsterdam he left a
fortune of HFL 1,5 million.
