In yesterday's issue of Svenska Dagbladet (15 January 2005), there was a picture of a newly composed flag intended to represent Swedish Jews. The flag was designed by Natan Zlotnik. In the newspaper, he expressed his wish to fly a flag at Jewish holidays, but that he felt the Swedish national flag, with its cross, inappropriate for that purpose.
The initiative, it seems, comes from the artist himself, and the flag has no official status. It is featured at an exhibition (January 16 to 31 March) at the Jewish Museum in Stockholm.
Estimates of the number of Jews in Sweden range from about 16000 to 20000.
Mikael Parkvall, 16 January 2005
I have a bit of a problem with the colors in the Swedish Jewish flag. I
know that blue and yellow are the Swedish national colors, but given the
peculiar significance of the yellow Magen David within European Jewish
history, particularly recent history, I think it would have been perhaps a bit
more tactful to have the colors reversed. After all, the blue Magen David has
had a more positive image throughout Jewish history.
