Presentation of Lendava

The bilingual municipality of Lendava (in Hungarian, Lendva) is located in the far north-west of Slovenia, in a region called Prekmurje ("over the Mura river"). Before the First World War, it was part of Hungarian Kindgom (within the Austro-Hungarian Empire), and there is still a considerable Hungarian community living there. Lendava region is known among other things for oil production, exceptional for Slovenia.

The coat of arms and flag of Lendava are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Lendava (text), adopted on 12 September 1996, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije 96/54 on 27 November 1996, with effect on 4 October 1996.
The municipal emblems are provisioned in Article 7 of the "consolidated" municipal Statutes Statut Občine Lendava (Uradno prečiščeno besedilo) (text), adopted on 8 September 2010 and published on 24 September 2010 in Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 75/2010 - as usual, to be prescribed by a specific Decision. This "consolidation" must include four amendments made in 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2010 to the original Statut Občine Lendava, published in Uradni list Republike Slovenije 26/1999.

The Decision shown in the official gazette has no images of the coat of arms and flag, but only their description.
Here is the translation of this (ambiguous) description:

The flag of the municipality of Lendava is in proportions 1:3 (width:height). Along vertical axis it is divided in three fields. The first field is green, the second is silver and in the middle it contains the local coat of arms. The coat of arms is proped to the first fourth of the white field and ended on the third fourth of the white field.

The flag is hoisted either alone, or with both the flag of the Republic of Slovenia and the flag of the Hungarian ethnical community (as far as I know, such a flag is nowhere defined by Slovene legislation, though some flag laws mention it, together with the right of its usage - I guess it is given to the Hungarian community to choose what their flag is, and in practice that means it is the Hungarian flag, with or without the Hungarian coat of arms, as they please).

The colour specifications for both the flag and arms are:
- Blue: Pantone Reflex blue / CMYK 100-72-0-6
- Green: Pantone 376c / CMYK 56-0-100-0
- Yellow: Pantone 109c / CMYK 0-11.5-94-0

Željko Heimer & Ivan Sache, 10 October 2010

The flag of Lendava is divided in three equal parts: green, white and blue. On the center of the white field there is the municipal coat of arms. The blue field is divided in three parts by two white stripes (proportions are blue:white:blue:white:blue = 2:1:2:1:2).

István Molnár, 2 August 2001

The symbols' page of the municipal website adds that the symbols were adopted in a municipal contest; among 11 poposals, the jury selected the proposal made by Katjuša Kranjc, from Ljubljana. The coart of arms highlights the location of the castle of Lendava, on a hill dominating the town. The triangular flag over the castle symbolizes the dynamism of the town. The blue and green colors represent Slovenia and Hungary.

The coat of arms, which was designed by Katjusa Kranjc, is described in the Decision as follows:

... on a blue shield of late Gothic shape. On it there is a rectangular fort standing on a green mount, under which there are running three silver (white) creeks in shield base. The fort is topped with a triangular roof, that bears a gold (yellow) triangular flag.

Zalokar [zal90] reports the "coat of arms" used by Lendava before the 1990s. I estimate it was adopted around 1980.
The emblem is a circular bas-relief medal picturing the old town of Lendava and oil derricks around a printing press. The old town (in the sinister end of the medal) is easily recognizable in comparison with current symbols. The printing press is included as in Lendava was the oldest printing house in Slovenia. The oil derricks stand for oil production in Lendava.
