The coat of arms is prescribed in Article 4 of the 2015 Decision, as follows.

The coat of arms is in a shield shape,its bottom edge being oval. The coat of arms is shaped symmetrically, divided into the top and bottom parts. In the bottom part is, on a green background representing the green valley, a stylized black miner wagon, representing the mining tradition. In the top part, coloured blue representing the sky above the valley, are two chimneys set symmetrically and a stylized ore heap raising above the wagon. All the symbols are black, as well as the shield edge. The colours used for the coat of arms are:
- Green: RAL 6018;
- Blue RAL 5015;

Kobel and Pirchegger (Steirische Ortswappen einschliesslich jener der ehemaligen Untersteiermarck, Graz, 1954) show a different coat of arms for Trbovlje (German, Trifail): "Argent two miner's hammers in saltire over a triple mount vert in base a mine shaft supported by wooden beams." Historically, the municipality of Trbovlje war formed in 1850 and was granted marketplace rights in 1926. It is unclear if the Kobel-Pirchegger's arms was used in any of these periods.

Zalokar's book [zal90] shows the former coat of arms of Trebovlje, that was obviously the inspiration for the current one.
The former coat of arms has a somewhat different shield with the chief white and the chimneys red. It also includes a red fist rising from the wagon and atop a red five-pointed star. All of this symbolizes mining, industry and the revolutionary past of Trbovlje.
