Aleš Křižan, 22 Jan 2001
Hriňová is the second largest settlement in the region after Detva.
It deserves mentioning because the largest part of the Polana
protected landscape area belongs to its administrative unit. Hriňová
has about 8 500 inhabitants. The village originally belonged
to Detva, but in 1881 it became independent. In the past it was known
namely for its glass works (originally in the hamlet of
Skalisko - in the 18th century, between 1840-1918 the glass works manufactured
cut glass in Hriňová). Today the tradition of
glass manufacture is complemented by manufacture of Christmas
ornaments. Then there were the steam saws for cutting wood
and the narrow gauge railway which transported wood from the nearby
forests to the saw-mill and to the railway in Kriváň. In
1962 both the saw-mill and the narrow gauge railway were broken
up due to the dam's construction. The area was not
affected by the collectivisation, and now cultivation of
small areas still prevails. The Hriňová reservoir with the area of
48 ha is
the largest supply of fresh water in the region. (Info from the
