Presentation of Yusufeli

The municipality of Yusufeli (22,234 inhabitants in 2012, 6,856 in the town of Yusufeli; 227,000 ha) is located 100 km southwest of Artvin.

The district was established by Law No. 3,531, enacted on 16 February 1950, which transferred it from Erzurum Province to Artvin Province, where it had been until 1933.
The district is made of 62 settlements, including the sub-district municipality of Kılıçkaya (1,027 inhabitants), once the capital of the district under the name of Ersis.
Yusufeli is the municipality with the highest rate of emigration in the province; population decreased from 37,060 inhabitants in 1990 to 22,220 in 2008 (- 40%).

The foundation stone of the Yusufeli dam was laid on 26 February 2016. During the ceremony, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan, connected by satellite, proclaimed that the dam would be the biggest of the country and the third highest in the world within the category of arch-dams. Part of the Çoruh River Basin Development Plan launched in the early 1980s, the construction of the dam would lead to the submergence of the entire Yusufeli town center and of 19 villages, the displacement of c. 20,000 people and the destruction of all agricultural land.

Flag of Yusufeli

The flag of Yusufeli (photo, photo) is white with the municipality's emblem in the center. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The emblem represents the rugged topography of the municipality, which is watered by river Çoruh.
The bull recalls the famous bull wrestling festival organized every year in Yusufeli, a tradition that shall also be submersed by the Yusufeli dam.
