The former municipality of Umurbey (3,367 inhabitants in 2000) is located 30 km of Bursa.
The flag of Umurbey was white with the municipal emblem. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The emblem features Celal Bayar's mausoleum (photo, photo).
Mahmut Celal Bayar (1883-1986) was Prime Minister of Turkey (1937-1939) and 3rd President of the Republic (1950-1960). In the aftermath of the coup of 27 May 1960, Bayar was sentenced to death in September 1961, as well as Prime Minister Adnan Menderes, Foreign Minister Fatin Rüştü Zorlu, and Finance Minister Hasan Polatkan. Unlike the others, however, Bayar's sentence was commuted to life in prison because he was 78, hence older than the law allowed for execution. He was released on 8 November 1964 for health reasons; the following year, President Cevdet Sunay pardoned his remaining sentence
The death of Celal Bayar sparked controversy over where to bury him. The press reported that he wanted to be buried at Atatürk's mausoleum where Atatürk and Inönü were interred. But that would have required changing the law, which stipulated that only Atatürk and Inönü could be buried in the mausoleum. In the end, Bayar was buried in Umurbey, where he began life.
