The flag of İstanbul (photo, 31 May 2008) potentially exists in three colours, red, blue, and white, in three different designs all featuring the emblem of the town:
- beneath the emblem, "İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi", on three lines, "Büyükşehir" in bigger letters.
- beneath the emblem, "İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi" (semi-circular);
- above the emblem, "İstanbul" (horizontal), beneath the emblem, "Büyükşehir Belediyesi" (semi-circular);
All the writings are in capital letters. "Büyükşehir Belediyesi" means "Metropolitan Municipality".
The emblem of the town of İstanbul was designed by Metin Edremit, winner of a contest organized by the municipal administration in 1969.
The lower part of the emblem shows the Bosphorus, which separates the town into two parts and combines two continents (Europe and Asia). The
city walls of the historical town are shown on each side.
The famous mosques of İstanbul and their minarets, which
constitute a major item in the town's tourism potential, are
symbolized as they are seen in the İstanbul skyline. The
seven triangles in the middle of the emblem represent the seven
hills on which Istanbul was built.

The emblem, unveiled on 21 January 2013, is based on the Ahilik tradition, which was established during the Seljuk period. The octagon refers to traditional Seljuk iconography. Its end points represent eight concepts. The turquoise color was selected as a symbol of globality and Turkey.
The emblem is represented in three dimensions, to highlight the three pillars of İTO:
- providing all the legal services provided by Law;
- putting forwards works that take further;
- defending projects with social responsibility.

İstanbul Commodity Exchange
Flag of İSTİB - Image by Ivan Sache, 5 September 2019
The establishment of İSTİB (photo) was envisaged for the first time in 1880. However, this establishment could not have been realized for a long time due to some problems. At that time, the foundation of a commodity exchange had been entrusted to the İstanbul Chamber of Commerce. The legal procedure was supplied with the Regulation of Commodity Exchanges in 1886.
Hence, the establishment of the commodity exchange has been retarded.
That delay was probably caused by the unwillingness of merchants in
İstanbul to join that kind of institution which imposes some regulations
which force them to make trade by following determined procedures and
tariffs. Because of all these factors and the wars occurred at the time
of the events, commodity exchange could not have been established at the
period of Ottoman Empire. With the proclamation of the Republic in
Turkey, the subject had come to the agenda again by the proposition of
some members of Parliament. The İstanbul Cereals
and Commodity Exchange was legally established on 19 October 1924.
Instantly, since there was not a laboratory to inspect the crops, the
construction of a new building started in May 1926. Cereals, pulse and
oilseeds were inspected and published on boards. The İstanbul Livestock
Exchange was opened separately from the commodity exchange on 13
February 1929 although the İstanbul Commodity Exchange had been very
active in its establishment. That error was corrected with Law No. 4355 -
Law on Chambers and Commodity Exchanges - which came into force in 1943
and İstanbul Livestock Exchange which had been operating in
Karaagaç, was abolished. All documentation was transferred to İSTİB by October 1943.
The name of "Animal Exchange" was changed as "The Agency of Butchery
Affairs". In 1988, with the Haliç Cleaning and Redeveloppement Project,
it was decided to move this slaughterhouse to Tuzla / Aydınköy. The İstanbul Commodity Exchange Livestock Establishment was opened at Tuzla / Aydınköy on 26 January 1989.
