The flag of Torbalı (photo) is white with the municipality's emblem, which features the theater of the ancient town of Metropolis and a cogwheel alludeing to Torbalı Organized Industrial Zone (Tarbalı Organize Sanayi Bölgesi; heating-cooling, machinery production, building materials, furniture, plastic).
The history of the borough dates back to the antique ages. Today's
Torbalı was built on the fruitful lands of the Küçük Menderes and first settlements began in 3000 B.C.’s on the borough which is between Ephesos
(Selçuk), Smyrna (İzmir), Colophon (Değirmendere), Nation (Ahmetbeyli) and Nif (Kemalpaşa) antique cities.
The earliest settlement in the region was uncovered at Metropolis
antique city. The region developed in 2500 B.C. during the Hittite reign
and lives its most glorious days during the Lydian period. In order, it
lived through the Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze ages, the Phrygian,
Lydian, Persian, Roman and Byzantine eras, between 1071 and 1317 Seljuk
and Aydınoğulları, and finally the Ottoman Empire.
It is believed that the borough got its name from Triyanna or Tripolis
which were other names for Metropolis. Metropolis means the city of the
Mother Goddess. Famous historian Strabo had stated that the city was a
wine center during the antique age.
The importance of Metropolis lies with the fact that it was built on a
strategic hill on the main road between İzmir and Ephesus. This
important but small city, where trade was popular, developed thanks to
the products grown on fruitful lands and wine production. Another
importance of Metropolis is that it had Hellenistic period monuments
that are rare. The Metropolis antique city is still located on the
outskirts of Kocadiz Mountain which is covered with olive and pine trees.
The theater in Metropolis was built on the slope made from the schist
main rock and overlooks the south of the city just like many others
during the Hellenistic period. Seating was fixed on a block that was
carved inside the main rock. Seating is divided into two by the diazoma.
At the bottom, there are 7 ax planned parts divided by stairs and 14 on
the upper part. The theater has 3600 seating.
