The emblem features Samsun's landmark, the Statue of Honor, an equestrian monument dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938). The monument recalls that Kemal landed on 19 May 1919 in Samsun, where he started the organization of a national movement, the first step to the War of Independence (1919-1922). The monument was designed by the Austrian architect Heinrich Krippel (1883-1945), commissioned by Governor Kazım Pasha. Of nearly 9 m in height, the monument was inaugurated in 1932.

Canik Success University (Canik Başarı Üniversitesi) was established in 2012.
The foundation of Canik Başarı University, Samsun’s first private institution of higher learning, was officially laid on Sunday in a ceremony. Public Works and Housing Minister Mustafa Demir, Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Samsun deputy Suat Kılıç and a large crowd of locals took part in the ceremony. Speaking at the ceremony, Demir noted that the university, which will be located in Samsun’s Canik district, will contribute significantly to the Black Sea province of Samsun as well as to Turkey. “Samsun has recently come into the spotlight for negative events, such as the attack on Kurdish politician Ahmet Türk in Samsun on April 12. However, Samsun is engaged in important projects. The city, which played a significant role in the country’s War of Independence, will soon have two universities, the first one being On Dokuz Mayıs University. I appreciate every person who is exerting great effort to establish the new university,” Kılıç said.
Galip Öztürk, a businessman whose company has undertaken the project of establishing the new university, said he did not have the opportunity to attend university but that he is pleased because the university will offer many students the chance to study at one. The new university, which will be built on 130,000 square meters of land, is expected to open its doors for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Samsunspor

Samsun has a football history stretching back to 1919 when Tahir Usta founded Samsun İdman Yurdu. They were joined by Alyıldız İdman Ocağı two years later. Samsun's third club Zaferi Millî İdman Derneği, later known as Türkocağı Spor Şubesi was founded in 1923. In 1926 Alyıldız İdman Ocağı and Türkocağı Spor Şubesi united under the guidance of Nuri Bey and established Samsunspor (Samsunspor Kulübü Derneği). However, the club became recognized as a professional football club years later in 1965 after the cities amateur teams 19 Mayıs, Fener Gençlik, Akınspor and Samsun Galatasaray Gençlik merged with Samsunspor.

Samsunspor had been one of the more successful teams outside of the traditional big four. The Red Lightning had participated in the Turkish Super League for 13 years between 1993-2006; however, it failed to win any title during this period.
The clubs darkest hour came 20 January 1989 when the team coach crashed on the way to an away game with Malatyaspor. Manager Nuri Asan, players Muzaffer Badalıoğlu, Mete Adanır, Zoran Tomiç and the coach driver Asım Özkan all lost their lives. Seven additional squad members were also injured. Samsunspor were unable to continue and pulled out of the league. However, the Turkish Football Federation allowed them to remain in the top flight due to the unfortunate circumstances.
