"The city history was bound up with cossacks. After
suppression of Bulavin revolt 49 cossack settlements have been
burnt (including Osynovyi Roven'ok near small river Aydar - now
it is Roven'ky of the Belgorod area, Russia). Cossacks, saved
from prosecution, have named new settlement on "the Wild
field" Roven'ok in honour of the burned city. In the first
mention of a large village was spoken: "Large village
Orlovo-Rovenets'ka is at top of Roven'ok beam, on its both
parties on slopes of a beam. The initiator of Ukrainian
immigration was general-major Vasyl' Petrovych Orlov
(subsequently the army ataman) in 1793. In end of XIX century
rich deposits of coal here have been found there. In beginning of
XX century the village becomes the advanced trading industrial
centre. In 1934 Roven'ky have received the status of city. Now a
basis of economy of city is the coal enterprises.

"It was confirmed at June, 4d, 2003 by the decision N 9/290
of city council ninth sessions of twenty fourth convocation. The
shield per fess by vert and sable. In the center is a sable
square in argent light; in argent left flank are three gules oaks
with acorns in pale. The emblem adorned by argent decorative
cartouche and crowned by argent city crown. Below it are
crosswised argent pick and hammer, twisted by green-red-black
tape with white inscription "ROVEN'KY". The authors are
O.A.Zhytnychenko, A.V.Zakorets'kyi, K.Kravchenko, S.Kartyshkina.
For first hundred years of existence the main employment of
inhabitants were arable farming and the sheep breeding, the
second century - time of development of the coal-mining industry.
Therefore the board is divided on vert (Donets'k steppes,
agriculture) and sable (a underground bowels and coal output)
fields. The sable square - a symbol of coal - takes the central
place in the arms. The special role in city history is borrowed
with the Hrymychyi (Rattling) wood. It is in the city centre. The
age of some oaks in a wood is 120 years. The wood in the arms is
designated by three old oaks. The gules oak means struggle for a
life, heroic labour and fighting feats. The oak with acorns is a
symbol of power, force and hardness."
