Description of the flag

Dubuque County (92,384 inhabitants on 2006; 1,598 sq. km; county seat, Dubuque), founded on 1834, is located in central eastern Iowa. The county and town are named after the French Canadian Julien Dubuque (d. 1810), the first European settler of Iowa.

The flag of Dubuque County is described as follows in the "Telegraph Herald", 6 January 2009 (oddly named "ensign" in the title of the article):
"[...]
The Dubuque County flag actually was created in 1976, along with many other county flags, to celebrate the bicentennial of the United States of America. The white flag with a red border is dominated in the middle by a blue picture of the Dubuque County Courthouse. There is an outline of the county on top of the picture. The blue picture is placed inside a circle that is emblazoned with the words "THE COUNTY OF DUBUQUE" around the perimeter, and it is enclosed in a larger circle. There also is a star on either side of the word "Dubuque." The flag is currently flown in the back corner inside the Dubuque County Board of Supervisors chamber at the Dubuque County Courthouse.

The Dubuque County website shows the county's seal, which seems to be used on the flag, according to the description given above. Part of the image carrousel of the front page of the website, a photo of Port Dubuque shows the flags of Iowa, the USA and the town of Dubuque.

Flag used at sesquicentennial celebrations

Back in 2002, the Iowa State Association of Counties website hosted an account of each county's history, signed by its County Recorder, and illustrated with a black and white flag image. It is not clear whether these flag images were provided by the county administration or not.

All archived copies of the pages about Dubuque County still at web.archive.org/web lack the image of the flag. I hope we'll be able to find it some day. It may or may not have been the same flag as shown above, although likely so, as it was created in 1976.

It would seem so, as the ISAoC website and the booklet [u9s03b] seems to show almost the same set of county flags. On the latter (1st and 2nd photos of the 3rd row of page 4) we can see a white flag with centered emblem and red orle as described in our page.
