The flag is based on a logo designed by Stuart Arnold as cover art for a
section of the newspaper (Danville KY) Advocate-Messenger promoting the first
large-scale re-enactment of the Battle of Perryville. The art was popular and
was subsequently used without change as the city logo and for the city flag.
However, because a flag showing a Confederate flag is now problematic and
because the flag represents the battle more than the town, the town council
voted in June 2021 to form a committee to redesign the logo and, eventually, the
flag.

The Perryville City Council cast
aside its vote from last month to form a committee to redesign the Perryville
city flag, which says “Battle of Perryville” instead of “City of Perryville.”
The flag includes the depiction of a Confederate flag design, and the council
instead decided to keep the flag as it is. The decision came during Thursday’s city council meeting with a vote 4-1.

In July 2021 the city council voted not to change the flag and to dissolve a
flag redesign committee, which had never met. Reasons for not changing the flag
included its supposed acceptance by "a majority" or "99%" of residents and
because the city council represents residents, not visitors to the town who
might be offended by the flag.
