The Town

"The Town of Duck is a community located in Dare County, North Carolina along the Northern Outer Banks. Originally part of Currituck County to the North, the stretch of the Outer Banks which includes Duck was transferred to Dare County in the early 20th century. The region was named for the many ducks and waterfowl in the area. The area nearby was sparsely populated until the 1970s (during the 1950s nearby land was used as a bombing range by naval aircraft). The growing community remained unincorporated until 2002, when North Carolina General Assembly House Bill 882 was passed, incorporating the town. Duck is now home to about 500 permanent residents and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Duck Field Research Pier, which conducts coastal research." - from Wikipedia

The flag

"The Town of Duck Council unveiled Duck's first-ever Town flag. The flag commemorates the Town of Duck's five-year incorporation as a town which was officially celebrated on Tuesday, May 1, 2007." - from www.townofduck.com/pr_2007-05-18townflagunveiled.pdf, where the picture of the flag is shown.

Fifth anniversary flag

Based on: www.townofduck.com/pr_2007-05-18townflagunveiled.pdf

I recently returned from Duck, North Carolina. As we were leaving, we slowly rolled through Duck and, of course, I paid close attention to the flags that I saw waving. There were two flags that were hoisted and prominently displayed in the town. One was the flag [shown here], and  it was joined by another flag that featured the town logo displayed on a white field. Upon returning home, I did some research and found a photo of that second flag on the town's flickr photostream where it is labeled as "The Town of Duck Flag" (www.flickr.com/photos/townofduck/13082888705/). That would give one the impression that the white flag with the logo is the new official flag and that the one featured above has been relegated to more of an anniversary flag.

However, while combing through more of the flickr photostream, I found more than one occasion of a town council meeting or other event showing the American, North Carolina, and colored Duck flags being prominently displayed. Unsure of the status of the two flags, I have written to the town manager asking for clarification, but have yet to receive a reply.

The seal of the town of Duck shows a duck swimming, with the name and logo in a white ring around it.
