Cumberland County (213,674 inhabitants in 2000; 14,270 ha; seat, Carlisle), founded on 27 January 1750, is one of the four counties comprising the greater Harrisburg metropolitan area. The flag is explained on the county website as
follows:
"The circle of wheat represents the agriculture foundation, upon which Cumberland County's economy has been based. The stars represent the County's promising future. The cannon represents the people who defend our County and the foundries and war goods that were manufactured here. The open book represents the many colleges and schools of the County. Open, to show
continued dedication to higher education."
