City of Seneca, South Carolina, has a new flag. Read the full story here: www.independentmail.com/news/2010/jul/12/seneca-close-getting-new-flag.
"SENECA - In online voting, residents of Seneca have chosen a new design for a city flag and officials say it will be available soon. In April, the city put four flag selections up for voting on the Internet. "The city flag is in the works and we have selected a winner," said Riley Johnson, coordinator of public relations and events for the city. "We put it on the Internet to show residents the flag that won. Right now we are in the stages of sewing and knitting the flag together."
The community can view the city's new flag online at www.seneca.sc.us.
"The flag is blue and gold with a stripe through the middle and the city seal on it," said Johnson. The old flag, which consisted of the city seal with a plain white background, was criticized as being bland and colorless. A flag committee was formed to come up with a replacement. The committee was composed of Mayor Dan Alexander, city administrator Greg Dietterick, planning and development director Ed Halbig, Johnson and Seneca historian Louise Bell. "I'm very excited to see this project come to fruition finally because the mayor, Ed, and I have been tossing around the idea of putting some color in our flag and making a beautiful flag for the city of Seneca for several years," said Bell.
The new flag was shown at the city's July 4 event, but only on paper. A problem with the new flag was discovered before it could be flown over the crowd at Seneca's Gignilliat Field during the Independence Day celebration. "We are trying to make sure that we have the exact colors and the seal correct," Johnson said. "We wanted to make sure that everything can be viewed from both sides. Hopefully, the new city flag will be ready within the month." "We are going to have a flag-raising ceremony at Miracle Circle," Johnson said. "We will have dignitaries and the city council there. We are very excited about putting that flag up so everyone can see it." The new flag will fly at two locations inside the city: at Miracle Circle, where U.S. 123 and S.C. 28 intersect, and at Seneca City Hall, 221 E. North 1st St."
