Organizational Colors

The Tennessee State Guard is a military organization under the Military Department of the State of Tennessee. It is a parallel organization to the Tennessee National Guard. The Tennessee State Guard is exempt by act of the federal Congress from being mobilized as part of the federal armed forces. Its primary role is to take over the duties of the Tennessee National Guard when it is sent out of the State on a federal mission.

The new organizational colors for the State Guard consist of one color for the State Guard Headquarters, and one for each of the four brigades.

Battalion Color

The State does not provide for organizational flags other than those for the Division or State Headquarters, and for the Brigades. Battalions must come up with their own colors. My battalion's color was one I made back when I was just a 1st Lieutenant. It is not a proper color, but more nearly a camp flag in the British military tradition. Nevertheless, it was all we had, so it was used as a color. The yellow ribbon shown on the blue stripe is actually gold.

A few years ago a division crest (actually a shield for you heraldry experts) was adopted. It is white, with a blue saltire, and a red star centered on the saltire. When these pins were first distributed for addition to our uniforms, I thought it would make a fine design for a flag, and determined to make a proper battalion color based on this design.

I substituted a green saltire for the blue saltire. Blue is the branch color for infantry, green for the military police. I fimbriated the star with yellow, the MP secondary branch color, and added the unit designation "201 MP BN" to the star in yellow". I will finish this flag shortly, and present it to my old battalion at the Battalion Christmas Party in December.
