Gloucester County is in central eastern Virginia at the end of the Middle Peninsula and can be considered a suburb of the Virginia
Beach-Norfolk-Newport News area. Founded in 1651, the county was named after Henry Stuart, the Duke of Gloucester and third son of King Charles I. Prior to English settlement in Virginia, the area that became Gloucester County was home to Werowocomoco, the capital of the Powhatan Confederacy, that was destroyed by the English in the early 17th Century.

The flag of Gloucester County can be seen in photographs of the 2016 Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) annual conference. The flag features the circular county seal centered on a green field. The seal shows a yellow beehive sitting on a yellow table with green grass below and blue sky above. The scene is encompassed by a white ring bearing the words "GLOUCESTER COUNTY" in black letters arched in the upper half of the ring and the words "VIRGINIA ESTAB. 1651" in similar lettering in the bottom of the ring, separated by 10-pointed black stars at the sides.
