Mathews County is the easternmost county on Virginia's Middle Peninsula. Formed in 1791 from neighboring Gloucester County, it is named after Revolutionary War Brigadier General Thomas Mathews, the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates at the time of the county's creation. The county sits on the Chesapeake Bay and is the second-smallest county in the Commonwealth by land area.

The flag of Mathews County can be seen in a photograph posted online by the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) from their 2016 annual conference (www.vaco.org). The flag features the county seal in blue and white centered on a blue field. The seal is fimbriated with a gold border, and the flag itself appears to have a gold border as well.

From the county official website, mathewscountyva.gov/about-us, "The Mathews
County seal was adopted on February 11, 1793 and symbolizes the shipbuilding industry, which was of major importance to the economy of the county."
